Many people would agree that the Bergan’s cross country team has improved a lot throughout the past several years. After sitting down with Bergan’s Cross Country coach Wyatt Morse, he revealed some great opinions about the team’s level of confidence and quality performance.

What has been the team’s biggest struggles throughout the season?

“Our team's biggest struggle is consistency. We run well in one meet and then we’ll take a week off from practice, then we run poorly at the next meet. So developing consistency has been our key issue all year.”

What areas has the team improved on most throughout the season?

“We’re learning to work hard, whether it’s in practice or meets. We’re solely starting to figure out you have to work hard to get results. It’s been nice to see as we get into the last part of the season that our kids are kind of figuring that out. And hopefully with conference and districts coming up we can have that hard work pay off.”

What have been some of the biggest highlights throughout the season?

“Dre Vance has had a good season, finishing 3rd and 5th has been his best finishes. For the girls, Jadin Ostrand and Emma Larson have run very consistent for us this year. Middle School wise, Max Nosal kind of came out late and he won two meets. Our kids have really improved all throughout the season, each meet they are trying to get better, so looking at them competing has kind of been the highlight.”

Are there any specific running workouts you do to prepare for conference this week and districts next week?

“Not really specifically, we kind of just go through our own thing. Mondays and Tuesdays are our hard days. We try to get some hills in there. Wednesday of next week will be our easy day before districts, while Thursday of this week will be our easy day before conference. We kind of keep everything the same to keep everything consistent throughout the year and take these meets like any other meet.”

What are you most nervous for as the team heads into conference this week?

“I’m not too nervous. I just hope our kids do well. It is an interesting sport where you go out and run 3.1 miles. So as long as our kids are improving and they are happy with their performance, then there is nothing for me to be nervous about.”

What are you most excited for as the team heads into conference this week?

“I’m excited to see how we compete. Our conference is always very competitive. I’m hoping Dre runs another really good race and gives himself a chance to be in the top half of our conference and then see how our girls can compete because I think they can do some good things as well.”

Post note:

Dre Vance (11) qualified for the NSAA State Tournament at the D-1 District Cross Country Meet in Malcom, NE on October 12th, 2017. Dre finished 6th in the boy's varisty division on the Branched Oak course. Dre is also the first Bergan student to qualify for State since 2013.
