Campus Ministry: Thy Kingdom Come

Many Christians would agree that one of their main goals is to get to Heaven, but it should be more than just a goal. Christians should strive to make the Kingdom of God present here on earth. At Archbishop Bergan, one of the themes this school year is Thy Kingdom Come. The students, staff, and faculty are working on making Heaven present here on Earth through their words and actions. The idea for this theme came from one of Bergan’s theology teachers, Mr. Michael Vanek. He had been praying throughout the week, and one of the prayers he repeatedly said was the Our Father. The verse “thy kingdom come, thy will be done” kept sticking out to him. He pitched the idea of Thy Kingdom Come, and then it became the goal for the 2017-2018 school year. Throughout the school year so far the students, staff, and faculty have tried to live out Thy Kingdom Come through the service projects they have been doing. The staff has volunteered their time at Low Income Ministry by helping them prepare for the winter months coming up. The students are living out the theme through their service hours and service projects like painting a fence at the Jefferson House, or collecting food for the Parish Pantry. While we have done a decent job so far trying to live out Thy Kingdom Come, there is always more ways to make it be Heaven on Earth. Sometimes everyone gets so busy, especially around the holidays, that we forget about it. Even when everyone’s schedules are so crazy, we can still live it out through the many activities, sports, and clubs that Bergan students participate in. And when we live the theme out, or when we do anything in general, it should have a meaningful purpose behind it. In the words of Mr. Vanek “We shouldn’t be doing things just to do things or get them done. We should be bringing the Kingdom of God to Earth in everything we do.”
