Preparing for District Music Contest

April is an important time for the band and choir at Bergan. It is district music time, and the students in band and choir are preparing to compete. District music is when the choir and band are able to play or sing pieces of music to display their talents. It’s also a time when students can display their own personal talent by doing a solo, duet, or small group performance. All performances are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the superior rating. There are five categories that each solo, duet, small group, and large group are judged on: diction, intonation rhythmic precision, expression, and other factors.

This year, both the band and choir of Bergan is submitting large groups, consisting of 7th-12th graders. The choir is also sending an all-girls choir this year as a large group. With large groups, singers and musicians perform two songs for three judges. Then, the judges will decide on a score in each category and give an overall score.

Besides the large groups, there will be many solos, duets and small groups from both the band and choir. The soloists from choir are Grace Sendgraff, Bryanna Hapke, Haley Schuler, Dylan Fuchs, and Alexis Woods. There is one duet from choir consisting of Grace Sendgraff and Zoey Hurst. Finally, there will be a trio from the choir that includes Bryanna Hapke, Raegan Hoyle, and Grace Sendgraff.

The band is also sending numerous solos and duets. Students performing woodwind solos are Grace Sendgraff, Dylan Fuchs, and Emma Contreras, with Brett Hilbers, Evan Steed, and Nick Kincannon performing percussion solos. There are also two duets performing; one duet is a trumpet/tenor sax duet by Jobe Sullivan and Jake Ridder, and the other is a flute/clarinet duet by Madi Hughes and Aleesha Broussard.

Solos, duets, and small groups are judged on the same five categories, but they only have to perform in front of one judge, instead of three. The students will perform all their pieces of music on Friday, April 20th at Yutan Public Schools. We wish them the best of luck as the band and choir continue to work hard to prepare for District Music.

POST NOTE: Both the Bergan choir and all-girls choir received a 2 rating. The Bergan band received a 1 rating. Several soloists and duets received both 1 and 2 ratings.
