Senior spotlight: Derek Smith

Every high school senior has written their high school story differently. A senior is called just that because of their seniority in the high school; they are considered the oldest, wisest, and closest to becoming adults. To many this may seem frightening or unpredictable. Every senior sees their position in life and the high school differently. To Derek Smith, being a senior means spending his Friday nights playing football and getting McDonald’s on precious open campus time.

Derek has always believed in the simple pleasures of life: a night out with friends, a fun high school dance, an addicting television show. He has always had a knack for living in the present and making the most of every day. There are, however, still many unanswered questions about this unique senior, some of which are answered directly by Derek in the following questions.

What are your ideas/plans for your future thus far? College and/or career?

“I plan to study somewhere at a four year college most likely. I don’t really know what my future holds. I just know I want the rest of high school to be as good as it can be. For a career, I pretty much want anything that won’t make me homeless.”

Now in your senior year, what has been the biggest thing you have learned about yourself during your time here?

“I have learned that no matter how much you try in life and in school, you can't control anyone or anything except for yourself. You just need to accept how life goes and what people think about you because once someone judges you, you won’t be able to influence them that much. I have learned that first impressions are extremely important.”

What are a few of your favorite things? (animal, color, sports team, class, teacher, food, drink, car, etc.)

“Taper, [the color] orange, the Louisiana State University football team, Strength Training and Study Hall with Mrs. Peitzmeier, Mr. Marolf, Italian food, red Kool-Aid, Dodge Challenger.”

What are a few of your hobbies?

“My hobbies consist of sleeping, eating, lifting weights, playing football, running track, and chillin’.”

If you could go one place in the world for a week, where would you go and why?

“Rome, Italy because I want to see all the old temples.”
