Unforgettable Art

Close to every student here at Bergan has had an experience, good or bad, in art class. Fond memories of “Don’t Steal My Stuff” and sketchbook assignments come to mind when we look back. I asked students, what is your favorite memory of art class? Here’s what they said. Many of the students mentioned that their favorite memories came from Art 7 & 8. One highlight of junior AJ Walter’s art experience was the Emotion Project. If you never took art in middle school, here’s what it is. You have six boxes, each of which you must paint to represent an emotion, but you aren’t allowed to use distinct symbols. Aj liked this particular project because he got to convey his feelings through paint. Another project the students remember is from Art Fundamentals. A favorite project from this class was the Ceramic product, where students become familiar with clay. Junior Raegan Hoyle said this was her favorite because she “made a softball and it was really cool.” Other students in Art Fundamentals now are starting this project, and are very excited. Painting, one of the upper-level art classes, is also a highlight for many students. Senior Karsyn Heller recalls one of the first projects: the Fruit Painting. For this project, students are asked to choose a slice of fruit that is cropped down, so that it becomes abstract. Karsyn set her sights a pineapple, which was quite the ambitious choice. She remembers how frustrated she was, but how it turned out well at the end. My personal favorite project also comes from this class. The Ceiling Tile Project is where students select a teacher and paint one of their ceiling tiles, fulfilling their teacher’s wish. I liked this because it gave me a chance to be creative with different painting styles and also leave a piece of my art in the school. Students from seventh grade to senior all have their own experiences in art. Some are fond memories, others, well, not so much. Even through the good and bad, every student I interviewed had something positive to say about the art program here at Bergan. That being said, take an art class! You never know what you could be missing out on.
