Heard It Through the GrapeVine
As many of you know, the popular app where you could film, edit, and share six-second long videos, called Vine, was shut down in January of 2017. However, many people still remember the most popular of these vines. There are still traces of Vine on other social media platforms like Instagram. Although, some people say that Vine is dead. I am here to state my case: Vine is still alive. Although it is not the same as it once was, Vine is still going strong. The app is not the main way the videos are circulated, it has found other ways to make itself present on social media. On Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, compilations of the “best vines” can be found. Also, some entire accounts are dedicated to posting funny vines. This allows people to access the videos and share them with friends, therefore keeping in the spirit of the original Vine app. One of the other ways that Vine lives on is through its past users. After watching vines, the most popular ones became so well liked that sayings developed from them. Many of these Vine references became common terms for teens and young adults. Also, some schools even have Vine days, where students can dress up as people from vines and recreate the experience. Through these actions, the culture that Vine created thrives and lives on. So, even though the app is no longer the wildly popular platform it once was, Vine prevails. It lives on not only through other social media platforms but through the people who once loved it.
